First aid

A human leg after less than 10 seconds of exposure to an ant mound. The venom of a fire ant bite causes stinging and swells into a bump. They can be very irritating at times, especially when bitten repeatedly by several at once. The bump often forms into a white pustule, which is at risk of becoming infected. The pustules are unattractive and uncomfortable while active and, if the bite sites become infected, can turn into scars. Some people are sensitive to the venom and experience anaphylaxis, which requires emergency treatment.[2] Signs of anaphylaxis can include dizziness, nausea, sweating, low blood pressure, headache, and shortness of breath. If the fire ants can be brushed off before they inject their venom, pustules will not form. For all victims, immediately applying a solution of half bleach and half water can reduce pain, itching, and pustule formation.[3] An antihistamine or topical corticosteroids may help reduce the itching. Rubbing Aloe Vera juice also reduces itching if applied immediately.

Fire ants are very bad and will bite and sting. The best way I have found to get rid of these pest is by using Andros fire ant killer. You simply sprinkle a small amount on the mound in the early evening. Repeat this same procedure a couple of days later to kill any new ants. This is a real problem all over the South!
I really do hope some experts will come up with an even better way to control these insects.

Fire Ants I admire them for there ferocity now that I am no longer around them! I was In central America for over 4 years so encountered them! Soon as those little ants went on my skin they bite a chunk! They are really vicious! They need like a second and they bite!

I have to admire them for such a tiny insect fire ants really pack a punch!

I am in the UK now so have only tame ants that don't really do such things.

we live in mississippi and each of my five children has run a-foul of fire ants

one of the incidents included some swelling and tenderness but no long lasting effects, and generally it didn't even teach them caution around ant beds

when i got into a bunch of them once while mowing the lawn, each bite hurt (not as bad as a wasp, but a sure-enough sting), but I didn't have an noticeable swelling even in the areas where I had multiple bites

like other insect bites, the effect is very different for different people and some people's reaction will be severe

Fire ants are terrible little creatures. If he was allergic, he'd be all swollen and would need to go to emergency. Sounds like he's having a typical reaction to me. Meat tenderizer or wet baking soda works wonders on the discomfort.

Take Benadryl, watch out for an allergic reaction (and if appears you have one, go to the hospital), and don't pop anything! Calamine lotion or a paste of baking soda and water on the area will help the itching and discomfort. Don't use any more peroxide because you're just irritating the bites!

Go to the doctor. My dad was bitten by fire ants in Florida and the toxin secreted into his body was so severe that he required oral antibiotics for 6 weeks.

yes, I grew up in Europe and got bitten many times by fire ants and it hurts!!! tell him to pee on his feet ... urine has been known to help take the sting away... it certainly helps when you get stung by a jelly fish, so maybe it helps with fire ants too! good luck
