I am getting a chihuahua in the winter with my allowance, b-day, christmas, and "tooth fairy" money. So, I am going to be it's primary and only caregiver. My sister wants to play with it when I get it, but we read that whoever spends more time with it, it will protect from other people. And, I am going to buy it with my own money, so I told her it might bite her? But I am going to spend so much time with it and stuff, so yeah. What should I do. And please do not say " Get a different kind of dog. "

I have two Chi's and I just love the breed! Sounds like you have a book. Great! Get as much info as you can.
They do tend to snap at you when they are young. We would tap the dog on the nose and say "no" or hold his mouth shut and say "no" firmly. It's a small dog so remember to be gentle. You wanna break that habit real quick.
We wanted very social dogs so we always had people handling them and holding them. Your dog will have his own personality and temperament. The more socialization the better!
If you spend the most time with him/her then yes he will bond with you. Also, if he/she sleeps with you then that's an additional bonding.
I wouldn't be too scared of letting your sister play with him/her. It'd probably be good for your little fellow. It depends on what kind of dog you want. The overly protective nip at your heel and bite others kind or the social lovebug? I prefer the lovebug.
Oh fyi, they love to burrow so be sure you don't sit on them if you let them sleep with you. :)
Just do your research. Applehead or Deerhead. Longcoat or smoothcoat. Male or female. Purebreed or Mix. Check out your breeder. Some overbreed their poor dogs and can be cruel.

If you want a well behaved chi or any other type of dog you need to socialize it and that means by letting other people hold it and pet it. If you keep your dog away from other people, kids and other animals you are going to have a freak dog that bites, is agressive because it's scared and it will not be fun for you as a dog owner. When sociallizing your dog with small children and other animals make sure you there and you do it slowly and carefully to avoid injury to your new puppy. Chi's are small and fragile but can be great loving pets if sociallized and trained properly. Because they are small and cute too many people don't train them properly and end up with a bad mannered dog.

You definately don't want a dog who will bite anyone, ever. Not even a chihuahua.
You should encourage everyone in your family to play with it and care for it so that it grows to accept lots of different kinds of people. You don't want a dog that is so into you that it bites everyone else. That's what's called a "bad dog" or even an "aggressive dog".

A friend of mine that I may see once every two months has a chihuahua and as soon as I get there she is in my arms. This silly little dog tries to protect me from the great dane. Its all in the dog. You don't want your dog to be afraid of other people so be sure to let the whole family and friends socialize with your new dog.
My dogs play with anyone and everyone but they still know who mommy is. They can be having the time of their life with someone and mommy whistles and they are with me instantly.
I hope you are getting a rescue. Their are so many homeless chihuahuas. I rescued one years ago that I wanted to keep so bad. She was so awesome with the other dogs. I had also rescued and american bulldog and he pissed her off and she was hanging from his face. It was so funny to hear the big beast cry because of the chihuahua.
Rescued animals will usually bond with you more strongly than others due to the fact they have seen a rough life and they are appreciative of your caring and loving them.

Please allow your sister to play with the Chihuahua. If there are fights over the dog, your family will all be upset, and may even get rid of the dog if it is causing too much trouble between you and your sister. Chihuahuas have enough love for the whole family! Allow ever one to play with it. it will always know that you are its owner, as long as you are the one that feeds it and keeps it safe and clean. but, if the whole family will be allowed to give it treats, and cuddling, it will be a much happier dog.

Well, for starters, a well brought-up chihuahua will not bite family members! The more people who spend time with it, the better, because it will be well socialized and friendly. My mom has a chihuahua who is 13 years old, and she has never bitten a single person, neither family member nor visitor.

Chihuahua's are not bad dogs. True they get attached if you only keep it to yourself and let no one els near it. The best thing is to socialize it. When it's a puppy let it get used to different people and your puppy will be a nicer chihuahua. They will still growl, bark and bite if they're being teased or harrassed. So be careful there.

chances are, it will b with u the most since you are the care giver, but if it is in the same house as your family and plays with people from your family and gets used to them, it wont bite. you may be its favorite, but that doesnt mean that it will hate everyone else. just make sure that when you get it, people in your family will be with it for a little while each day or so so it gets used to them and not just you. but if the dog is normal, u probably wont have any problem

oh chihuaha's are great dogs and I've seen thousands (REALLY)
and out of those thousands I've only seen one that would bite others when they got next to their owner and sometimes that dog
would bit her! SO you don't want to train your dog to bite people and they are so small that I wouldn't count on it saving your life of anything but who knows? I think it's good you are going to spend time with it but After a while the dog will know who it's owner is and your sister can play with it.She really wont make a difference.

Having had this type of dog in the past, it will make a great "family" dog!
Everyone who socializes with will be part of the family, this type of dog will become accustom to each member and shouldn't be a problem with biting unless it is treated badly!
