When I open a file in Excel and then close it without saving the date modified keeps the date that I opened the file and does no revert back to the previous date. I do not want it to do this, I want it to recognize I did not save the file and keep the original date modified in the file properties.

It will always change the modified date as soon as you open it (for any Office program).

The only way I can think to get around this is to make a copy and open the copy instead.

You can't it changes the modified date as soon as you open the file. Sometimes you can peak at the file when Click Open file and set the view to preview, but that doesn't always work.
