pets, like children respond very well to positive re-inforcement...
try lots of treats when he does the right behaviors. and no treats when he doesnt do the right behavior....
Also you can rewart him after a good training session with a favorite toy
and dont forget the verbal feedback in clear upbeat tones "good boy" and the low growly tones "bad boy" even growl - they will understand this in their dog language that its bad.
GOOD LUCK!

hold him on a leash and tell him to sit. tell him to stay very firmly and hold out your hand as if you are blocking his path. back away slowly while repeating the command evry couple of seconds. only bak a way to the end of the leash tho. if he gets up, put him back where his was and do it over. when he stays until you say "come" give him a treat and tell him he is a very good dog. eventually u should train him for staying for a long time.once he can stay for a little while, make him stay then back off a little and read a book or somthing.if he loks like he is going to get up, tell him stay firmly. u can practice with longer and longer amounts of time.
DO NOT HURT HIM OR TELL HIM HE IS BAD. IF HE DOES SOMETHING WRONG JUST TRY AGAIN. positive reinforcment, not negative

You want to know the secrete? here it is, the revelation - time.
You can train anything with time and of course treats.
Start by standing in front of the dog with a treat, hand up and say stay. give treat when he stays.
Second phase - move back repeat above steps until your in China and he's in the US.
You will eventually be able to leave him in the stay position when you go out of site.
Again, this is basic and brief you need a class or trainer or a good book - seek professional help.

you are going to have to first determine why the dog is stubborn?
does he think he is equal to you in the food chain
so you may have to work with his behavior, let the dog know you are the boss, do some dominance work with the dog then work on "stay"
my dog is stubborn as well and his issue is he thinks he is equal if not better than my husband and i
so we need to work on that before he learnes to stay, he doesn't come either he is a very naughty dog
one thing we were told was to not let him sleep in the bed and use his kennel not just for overnight and while you are at work but use the kennel as a tool to help him learn "stay"
so far we have him in there with the door open and he stays until the cat walks past him
that is another issue
good luck

First of all, you have to gain your dog's respect. In other words, you have to make sure your dog listens to you. Be firm and don't let him or her get away with barking or growling, or doing things you don't like. If that happens, they'll most probably want to listen. Use treats!!!! I always use that, and it's always worked. When you're training your dog, reward every little thing. Like, staying for 2 seconds. Gradually go longer. It'll work eventually. I've taught my neighbor's dog AND my dog to do tons of tricks, including stay, so I think you should be able to do it. And, besides, I'm only a kid!!! so an adult would be able to.

I would say to check out Caessar, the Dog- Whisperer on Animal Planet or another station. He's terrific! He approaches dog-behavior with animal behavior, and treats dogs as dogs, but it works. Number 1 is short, calm, approach. Dogs don't understand affection as humans do. Most of all they need much exercise. All dogs travel. Their energy level is a big factor. It does work, trust me.

Google "clicker training". It is the best training method for independent dogs because it makes training worth their while. You can teach anything with this method (tricks, basic obedience, potty training, crate training, advanced agility, anything) and it is the same method used to train wild animals in captivity such as dolphins, seals and tigers.

people think you should hit a dog to teach them to stay but this is not the case. you are meant to use different pitched voice to teach a dog i.e. if he does something wrong use a stern agressive voice, the dog will become conditioned to this and associate harsh tone with doing wrong - the same goes for teaching a dog to stay...
