The most logical way to travel is take the NSL to Jurong East, then transfer to east-bound train to Raffles Place, then transfer to NSL again to Novena. Even though this requires two transfers, the travel time (including waiting time) is about 41 minutes (peak hour), which is still shorter than the approximate 45 minutes if you travel along the NSL line without transfer.

However, on weekends and public holidays, it may be advisable to take the direct line without transfer, as the transfer penalties at both Jurong East and Raffles Place could outweight the saving in shorter route. As a guide, on weekends and public holidays, the train interval could be from 7 mins - 12 mins.
