I haven't been in several years, and the last time was on business. I used to live in Maryland and then D.C. so I've got friends all over the place and want a central location.

if you want to stay in DC and have a healthy budget, you might want to consider the Mandarin Oriental, very lavish place, otherwise, some good locations include Old Town Alexandria, Georgetown area, Tysons Corner, or Besthesda / Rockville Pike area, all have decent night life and plenty of things to shop for during the day time.

I'm not going to look up hotels for you, but the area you'll want to stay will depend on what you are doing on your trip and your budget.

If you are there for night life, or are getting your friends to meet at a night club, stay in Georgetown or Northwest near Dupont Circle or Adams Morgan (Wisconsin or Connecticut Ave). Arlington/Crystal City isn't a bad option either. I doubt you'll find a hotel in those areas under $100 a night though.

If you are there to sightsee, the most important thing is to stay near a metro stop--the subways here are some of the best in the country and are really the best way to get to the Mall, where all the museums and monuments are. If you don't take Metro, take a cab--bringing a car to the mall is frustrating because you have to park by the Jefferson Memorial (if you are lucky enough to park there) and hike back to the main part of the Mall, not to mention the problems everyone from out-of-town has with the criss-cross street layout, traffic circles, ubiquitous one-way streets, lanes that change direction by time of day, pole-mounted traffic lights and other weird driving situations you don't see in most other cities. Let your budget decide whether you stay in town or in the suburbs.

Stay at one friend's house one night, another friend's on the second night, etc. That's what I do when I go somewhere where I know a lot of people.

I never knew you used to live in MD. So did I! What part? I grew up in Frederick and went to school in College Park.

I love the Rossalyn area. I usually stay at the Hyatt. It's right across the water from Georgetown and has beautiful views of the Potomac. And it's not horribly expensive like some hotels.

Dupont Circle is a great area with easy access to the Metro to anywhere in D.C.
