I had been using Bitdefender but faced sum probs wit it..

Now i havce switched to AVG free + Outpost pro firewall

The reason being tht AVG does not hog sys performance and Outpost firewall has a built in Spy ware.

But it does overall slows the SYS.

You might want to add more RAM...256 isn't that much anymore. You made a good choice going with AVG...it uses very little system resources...maybe try Zone Alarm free version, I'm not sure how much that uses. I would definitely suggest getting more RAM though (at least another 256MB stick).

Windows firewall is useless, easily hacked. I use Eiwdo from grisoft and don't have issues. I also use AVG virus without the slowing issues. Eiwdo is mal/ad/spyware remover and protector. Or use ADWARE SE from lavasoft.

y dont u format ur laptop and try to use BITDEFENDER again which is the best antivirus ( if it is a retail edition) in www.top10reviews.com ratings. remaining antivirus softwares slow downs ur PC speed or gives less protection.

The windows firewall is usually adequate, try using that for a while.

Also, for antivirus, avast! (avast.com) is free. Give that a shot.

i can recommend 3 things and they are free:

anti virus: keep using AVG

Ad-aware: http://lavasoft.com/ -> click "ad-aware personal" on the left pane and download it for free

firewall: go to: http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm/3000-10435_4-10550364.html?tag=lst-0-2
and download it. BUT:
turn auto update to OFF. coz the newer version: 6.5.735 or sumthin is not working properly....

good luck!
