Because it is mostly done to hurt and destroy. There is an old saying that is so true. You need to clean your own closet before you start trying to clean someone else"s. Think about this: You are walking down the street late at night. You turn the corner and there stands a man and woman hugging , what is the first thing that enters your mind.(Yes that is what most people would think) But now you find out that the man and woman are brother and sister and he just came home from and 4 year stay is the Arm Forces, and she was picking him up. I'm not 100% on this but I think the Bible makes reference to bearing false witness. Meaning: don't tell a lie against another, and if you are to speak, speak what you KNOW to be the truth.
Truth, spoken appropriately or not (gossip) is truth.
