Machines vary, but most of the sound cards I've used since the early 90's have all been for the PCI bus. They can be had for as little as 19.95 clear up into a couple of hundred bucks. Depends upon features you desire. :-)=

Yes you can, you can get any regular sound card these days. Try to find a Sound Blaster Audigy card, which are relatively cheap now a days. The newer cards like the X-Fi platinum cards from creative sound blaster family come with a remote control & front face plate that allows you to control your music via remote. These newer sound cards all come standard with at least 5.1 dolby digital sound. The audigy & audigy 2 cards are the only Sound Blaster cards that are THX certified. There's also recording sound cards out there if your interested in making music, those are like the M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 and E-MU brands. That's only for more serious recording artists though. You'll do fine with a regular Audigy or Audigy 2 card set up. Find those at http://www.newegg.com just search for Audigy cards, and you'll see them right away.
