unless it's a cockatiel, cockatiel's are different because the male usually speaks and the female doesn't...
some breeds the male is brighter in color, but it's difficult to tell when you don't have a female to compare to. You can't just guess, "oh well, that seems bright to me".
My advice would be to get the bird DNA tested, there are a bunch of places that do it for very cheap. All you need is a blood feather or something to that effect.

In most birds, the ones that their colors are so close, you have to take them t a vet and get DNA done. We had to do this with our parrots and conures. That is the only for sure to tell on theses birds. Unless it is the wild one and the males are brighter colored than females..

Male Birds can bite much stronger than female birds do and female birds will try to move everything out of their territory to make themselves comfortable. Color sometimes can change the gender such as color of feathers or color of nose.
