When you look for wine, some of them have a little pink label wrapped around the neck with either DOC or DOCG written on it. This is an Italian thing, means Denominazione Origine Controllato or something, basically it's a confirmation that the wine is of excellent quality (the DOCG being the best). It's wierd as it seems to have no effect on the price which is great, some DOCG wines go for around £5 in tesco.

An old favourite for red is Wolf Blass though - gorgeous!

Torres Viña Sol is a really nice Spanish white, about £6. I know you said you preferred dry whites, but Tesco Finest Gewürztraminer is an amazing/unusual white wine, about £7. Goes well with Thai and Oriental food, very perfumy, tastes a bit like lychees.

How about a Chilean red? Concha y Toro and Cono Sur make pretty good ones. Errazuriz are a slightly smaller Chilean company, but also make nice wines.

It's interesting how many people are recommending Blossom Hill, according to a leading wine critic "anyone who deliberately drinks Blossom Hill is either a masochist or needs a palate transplant." ha ha! I'll have to give it a go now...

For around £7 - 8, you can pick up a good New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc which is perfect summer drinking. Anyone from the Marlborough region should be of a good quality, but Villa Maria is my favourite winery.

Alternatively, if you drink both, then good quality rosé's are getting easier to buy. My favourite is Wolf Blass, who does a good range of white wines as well

I love California wines, some are reasonably priced now if they are available where you live, try a few. Napa/Sonoma wineries are some of the best and wineries on the central coast (San Luis Obispo) are catching up. One very inexpensive, but very good red is Charles Shaw cabernet, it runs $3.00 per bottle U.S.--you can't beat that price for a great red wine! Cheers!

Wolf Blass wines, especially the "yellow label" (that's the name of it as well as the label colour by the way) are fantastic.
