I think it is a way for the mind to have an outlet. Who is to say , if this is normal. There is no normal. My son is 7 and He loves to pretend. Your imaginary friend is really a part of you. A defense mechanism created by the mind for you to release several things, like stress , joy, shame, things you feel you may not be able to share with others about. Maybe , you feel like you don't relate to others well. Or they don't relate to you well. One problem with not wanting to relate to others is that you stay exactly the same. We need each others to learn different things. Especially about ourselves, when we are interacting with people. We learn so much, by just living life. Do you have any fears that you feel keep you separete from others. ?? What do those fears do for you. Do they help you ,or cause you problems. ? As long as you are living your life and not holding yourself back, I don't see any negative effects. Some adults still talk to their deceased family memebers, I think that is ok too. As long as it is helping you for positive results and not negative isolation.
