Two areas that you can focus on:

* physically making more space
* creating the visual illusion of more space

For the physical part: get rid of any unnecessary furniture. Or, change the furniture. Maybe you have two dressers. Can you purchase one, slightly larger dresser instead? Also, if you use rugs in your room and have a few different rugs, change to using one larger rug. If you have furniture scattered or clumped, move whatever you can up against the wall. Don't crowd everything on the wall but if you can have a decent sized area that is open, it'll help give the impression of a large room. You can get some shelves mounted on the wall if you need storage areas. This way you get things off of the floor.

Illusion: if your room is organized into different zones -- like this is a sitting area with two chairs clumped together -- remove the "barriers" and make the whole room flow. If you have two chairs clumped together you could move them to opposite corners. Cut down on clutter caused by collections like stuffed animals or other trinkets. They take up physical space, true, but also groups of multiple things make an area seem busy or crowded. If you have a cluster of stuffed animals but want to keep the animals, uncluster them and place them throughout the room.

Light colored paint and fabrics will help, including curtains. Clean-lined furniture helps -- no bulky furniture with lots of adornments.

Have fun! Mirrors would help but you should be able to use some creativity to open up your room.

Use light colors and pictures. I'm not sure why your mom doesn't like mirrors in the bedroom, but she makes the rules.

Make like a college kid in a dorm room and loft your bed and put a couch under it.
