"Pathological" redirects here. For the mathematical term, see Pathological (mathematics).
Pathology (from Greek pathos, feeling, pain, suffering; and logos, study of; see also -ology) is the study of the processes underlying disease and other forms of illness, harmful abnormality, or dysfunction. Within biology but also a branch of medicine, it means specifically the study and diagnosis of the structural and functional changes in cells, tissues and organs that underlie disease. Pathology as a field of knowledge hence forms the basis of the scientific reasoning behind the practice of medicine.

there isn't an unique definition.
Also WHO had some problems to define the meaning of pathology... this depends on related phenomena such as economic or social problems that could determine or influence a disease...

For the common definition you can take every pathophysiology book.

But if you want to explain this concept to a child (child questions are usually very powerful) you could say that there is a kind of equilibrium in our body (connected to the environment) and when this equilibrium is broken there is pathology due to pathogens that cause improper functioning of our body.

In future, what is called nowadays a normal and physiological aging process will be considered as pathology.

Greek is one of the many languages I speak. The word pathos sounds similar to patho which means something that happened to pass. In relation to medicine, it means an illness that *happens* upon someone. A Greek might say: "e-patha kriolo-yima" which means he/she caught a cold or contracted the cold. The word epatha can be used in many different ways not relating to medicine at all.

The literal translation is closer to the study of things that happen to us - in this case, diseases.
