Currently Windows Vista is a free download as a BETA version. It is totally buggy at this point. But if you have nothing to lose, and lots of free time, GO FOR IT. Microsoft would love to use you as a guinea pig.

But Windows Vista will someday be released as a whole new operating system, to replace Windows XP and the previous product lines.

I actually recommend waiting for Windows Vista to mature a bit. I would wait a year before installing it as an upgrade, and avoid buying the first computers that have it for at least 6 months. I am not convinced that Microsoft has started using QUALITY in their work. Wait, to find out if any of your devices or software will work with Vista before trying it.

If you already have a computer, then the license for the operating system (ie WIndows) has already been purchased, and no further upgrades are possible other than web updates for flaws in that operating system's design and operation through Windows Update.

This being said, most likely you will have to go to a store to buy the Vista software. I have never seen a ligit copy of Windows available as a download on the internet. If anyone claims otherwise, 100% of the time it is a scam. Microsoft, unfortunately, does not allow downloads of its software, mainly for piracy reasons.

Now, if you purchased a new computer near the release date of Windows Vista, you may be able to get a voucher for a free upgrade, but then again, this is on a case by case basis, there is no telling which manufacterers might be doing this other than to check their websites.

Window Vista is a new operating system for microsoft so it will not be free. You will need to purchase it for the full version and if you want to upgrade from your current os, then there will be an upgrade fee.

I'm afraid you're gonna have to reach into the old piggybank for Vista. Bill Gates needs the money.

With every new operating system release, microsoft has charged for either an upgrade or a new copy.

In short, you'll have to pay.

You'll have to buy it. My guess is that it will cost about 140 as an upgrade.
