Ice takes up more volume than water. As a result, as the ice melts, the glass actually becomes less full.

The space the ice takes up is already claimed by the ice. Plus, ice is the only material known to man that is lighter and takes up more space when a solid than when a liquid. This is an especially handy phenomenon to fish in lakes that get frozen. Most other solids sink, but ice floats. Sinking ice would kill fish each winter. All that to say, whatever space is taken up by the frozen ice is more than enough to make space for the resulting water upon melting.

Water expands when it freezes. When the ice melts, the water contracts and takes up less space. Also, during the melting process, there is also some evaporation, so there will actually be less water in the glass.

because the ice displaces the liquid. as ice melts the liquid actually goes down in the glass. It's like when you get into a bath of water. The water level rises when you get in and goes down when you get out.

Because ice takes up volume which is part of the glass it self. Thats why you can put less liquid into a glass with ice in it.

i don't think that evaporation counts. the amount of evaporated water is insignificant.

your question might not be true in many cases. if you try to load much ice in the glass, it may overflow.

however, the explanation that when frozen at 4 celcius degree or lower, water expands. when it comes back to normal temperature, it actually takes up less volume.

The ice displaces a certain amount of water that is less than the amount of the water contained in the ice.
