Everybody always has so much to say. People are such jerks! If they know so much then why aren't they doing it themselves. Most peole are talkers not doers. I'm an artist also and I've heard it all. My advice is to do your own thing. You don't need the approval from others. You set yourself up when you show people your work. Whatever you say, when you show someone your work don't ask, "What do you think?" Good luck!

photography is subjective, but it depends what you want to get out of it.
if you want to sell photos and win competetions other people have to like them.
I believe you should always listen to criticism as the person has taken the time to look at the photo and say what they didn't like about it and you should appreciate the time that they took to do that.
about your photo of a statue from above, just because its different doesn't mean the person should like it.
if your taking photos for yourself why are you so bothered to post this question and be entering all these competions.

I went to a photo club - just once that is all I could handle. A bunch of middle age men ripping into peoples photographs, very harsh!
Photo clubs will not appreciate someone who takes photographs that think outside the box/fine art photography.
Why don't you think about setting up your own club? All ages and genres welcome?
Good luck.

If you take photos for yourself, then no... don't take too much heed into what people are saying. A lot of people get into photography almost as a form of meditation. It's a way for them to express themselves and release a lot of tension that has been built up during the day.
However, don't take suggestions as critical comments either. If you show a person your photograph, expect a comment (either good or bad) in return and don't take offence if it's not what you want to hear.

it's respectable you took photos of what you like. But if they won't allow you in this club because they don't like it why do you care? If you want in so bad except their criticism and maybe change it up a bit. Sad part about being an artist is you don't always get to do what you want.

Stick with it! Things that were considered very strange 10 years ago, are now selling for millions as they are now considered "art".
I for one love things that are different, for example your photo of a statue, as it's good to look at things from a different perspective. And as you said, you do it to make you happy....don't worry yourself about anyone else!

No, you do what you feel is right for you. Don't forget that all good artist were never understood by their contemporaries. Picasso used to pay his restaurant bills with a drawing because people weren't buying his art. And look how much people will pay now for one of those napkins.

I agree with the first user, stay true to your art. Considering art-history, most great artists' work was not understood or appreciated until years after their death--or their work was controversial during their lifetime. If what you are doing now makes you happy, then enjoy it, don't feel bad if others don't appreciate it, because it may just not fit into some modern art movement, however someday it might.

We all see things differently. Listen to what others have to say but don't necessarily change unless it makes sense to you.
If your photos are to your liking that's all that really counts.

Don't take any notice of them, why not hire a hall and mount your own exhibition, or find another artist to share costs, stay true to yourself, then your art will mean something.
