Ask him why he's scared. Maybe he did hear something. Assure him that it isn't scary, that he's been there before and remind him how it wasn't a bad thing. Explain to the dentist when you get there about his fears, a good dentist knows how to handle this kind of problem without causing more fears, and you both will be happy!

Believe me. I had a horrid evperience as a child when the dentist slipped and hit my tongue with a drill while filling a cavity. Then the creep told me to not cry because I would scare the other kids in the waiting room!
I still have a hard time dealing with the sound of a drill.

What kind of dentist do they see? A good dentist will not strike fear in your child. Some new ones have TV's that show videos while your child is having an exam, so they keep their minds occupied.
Try to explain to your child that you will be right there and not to worry, and that maybe since it doesn't take long, if he gets through it, maybe do something special afterward, something else to keep his mind off of it, and with something less stressful to look forward to. Good Luck!

How was the first visit? Anything scary happened? Kids may perceive new things as scary and then they fixate one that scary thought. Ask him how he feels; scared, punished. Ask him what makes it scary. Then don't try to say that his thoughts are not scary or stupid. Start by laying out the positive. Well they have a play area with toys. The chair is so cool, you can move it like a space chair. Le lady will look in your mouth and count your teeth and clean them with a special tooth brush, after you get a toy from the Dentist.
Many kids are scared of the noice (high pitch) from the instruments. May be the Dental Hygienist could spend few minutes to show him the instrument that make noices and to explain how it work and that it doesn't hurt.
Kids need reassurance that they'll be ok. Usually having them to know how things work it clams them down.
I always think of myself being abducted by aliens and having to face weir instruments and how freak out I would be, then applied that to my kid's perception of going to the Dentist. (yeah their imagination can get them pretty wound up)
PS. Talk to the staff, phone ahead and ask if they could do something or recommendations. They've been through a lot of screaming kids....and adults too.

I always like to make an appointment for me and my child the same day. That way my child can see that when I get my teeth cleaned that it is okay and there is nothing to be afraid of. Also you can have your child taken to a pediodent and they will or can put your child to sleep while they work on them, a regular dentist can't do that.

Offer Him a special treat for being a Big Brave Boy and tell him you will be right there with him.

its probably because of cartoons.... I'm sure Ive seen many cartoons exaggerate the whole dentist visit.... i would make her/him watch a friendly cartoon on how its not that bad to visit the dentist....

Tell them he wont hurt them. It is just to see if the teeth are OK. Say if you are good we can buy ice cream later.
