Not only do we have a soul, we are the soul!! The soul or self is temporarily covered by a gross material body, that is constituted of molecules and atomic particles, that are changing at every moment and completely rejuvenate themselves every seven years, so the material form you were dressed in seven years ago is completely different to the material form you have now.
Secondly there is a covering of subtle energy, the mind is finer then gross energy, intelligence is finer then the mind and ego or the awareness that I exist is finer then the intelligence.
The ego is either real or false, false ego means to identify myself as molecules and atomic particles or to take the middle ground, which is the secondary mis-understanding, to say that I am mind, which is the Descarte conclusion, this philosophical conclusion is a shadowy imitation of Buddhist philosophy.
To say that the evolutionary cycle of self awareness through memetic algorithm brings us to the point of soul searching is another mental speculation left wanting, because life comes from life, life does not come from matter, this is a Frankenstein theory, there is an evolution of consciousness, through transmigration of the soul or self, from one body to another, untill the self reaches the human platform of life, which is the loophole to transcend this material world, through proper use of free will or human volition.
The spirit soul is the original element and is part and parcel of the supreme soul or God. The spirit soul is individual and personal, as is the supreme soul, they become one in love and one in purpose, so there is oneness and difference at the some time, like the lover and the beloved. The absolute truth is personal, it cant be found in a test tube.
To revive the original spiritual body that is now covered, the step must be taken to approach a bona-fide spiritual master, who can not only provide you with the knowledge and systematic process of soul/self realisation, but through this process you will also be able to perceive spiritual reality and the source of all that exists, plus things which you cant even imagine.
The process of purification to attain soul/self realisation is not a fanciful new-age theory, this knowledge has been handed down from master to disciple, in an unbroken chain of disciplic succession for 5,000 years, so if you are serious to make this human life successful, ignore the shallow mental speculators and fundamentalists, for further discussion:-Sriman Sankarshan Das Adhikari (sda@backtohome.com)

Evolution's memetic algorithm?
The idea of a soul is a concept invented by people who didn't know how to describe their consciousness. It's nothing more than a concept. Our lives are finite but we have no context other than being alive and aware. It's hard for our minds to comprehend the idea of simply not existing. Because of this limitation the idea of a soul sounds completely plausible to us. However on deeper exploration of the concept of the soul we find that it is improbible. Evidence such as the total change of personality in brain damaged individuals calls us to challenge the idea of self-identity being tied to a soul. If we can change as a person due to changes in our physiology how likely is it for us to exist outside of said physiology... not likely at all.

What do you mean Just running evolutions memetic algorithm? We may only be the sum of our neural parts, but what parts! I prefer to think of my sense of self as a construction rather than an illusion However my Wife thinks it's an illusion.

Bhagavad Gita Affirms the existence of Soul apart from the Body.
We are the soul and not the Body. Soul existence is not illusory. Soul is eternal, God being the Supreme or Super Soul.
The Evolution of Consciousness of the soul may take place but the soul itself is non changeable

There is no reason to even suspect our thoughts and personality are not completely explained by the brain. There's no role for a soul to play.

I think that we have a soul because every cell in our body changes throughout our lives and yet we still remain ourselves and retain our memories.
