Salam (Peace)!
I am not a scientist but i can answer this. Just like how there are 7 stages of earth (if you study Geology), there are 7 Heavens and also 7 Hells. And God is above all of this on His Throne. Visit http://lightuponthetruth.tripod.com to view pictures of how small we really are and how huge is the universe around us. And people who do not believe in God merely have a purpose to live. Because those who believe know that there is a purpose for them in this life. What is expected of them and they know of the Hereafter. That they will be rewarded and judged according to their deeds.
I hope that answered you well.
Take care!

I believe there to be a heaven, of which there is one God and he is with his son and he has come to save the world and he will come to judge the world soon probably.
The Bible also describes two more heavens, the second one where the servants of God and the servants of the devil wage war. Angels and demons, this is the unseen, but by the things happening in the world we know there is a fight between good and evil and this fight is for the souls of mankind which are in or on the third heaven.
So there s my take as according to the Bible .

Instead of analyzing how many or what kind, maybe we are supposed to focus on what it takes t achieve that final place or plane of existence. And since most people are pretty dense, that we cannot achieve that level of maturity in the lifespan our bodies are currently capable of, hence more chances to learn the lessons needed to take us to that level of maturity. I think too many spend too much time looking at numbers or places or trappings, rather than look a the base lessons. Like the time spent by so many debating about Jesus' birth, or family or life up until he started on his mission. Shouldn't we be studying and trying to implement his lessons instead? What does it matter what kind of heaven is there or how many if we don't do the things required to get there?

The Bible talks about the atmosphere as heaven, outer space as heaven, and the place where God has His governmental headquarters, His throne, as heaven. When the time of earth is finished then God says that He will make a new Earth and this place will actually become the new headquarters for heaven from then on.

Paul taught in Corinthians that there are three. He was caught up in the third heaven. The Heavens have the glories compared to the brightness of the sun, moon and stars. This is the Celestial, Terrestrial and Telestial kingdoms.

The Earth's atmosphere, outerspace where the stars are, and God's throne are different heavens. Earth and it's atmosphere will be cleansed by fire 1000 years after Jesus comes and takes his people to visit his throne. Then they return with the New Jerusalem and live on this Earth after evil is cleansed by hellfire from heaven.

I believe there is one heaven, but several degrees of glory in that heaven. I believe most people will be in heaven, probably even adulterers, stealers, liars, and cheaters. This does not mean that they will dwell with God, but they will live in a degree of paradise.

One heaven, with many different levels, if you read the book of Enoch.

There's only one heaven because heaven is where God ,who's one, is. But you can be "higher" in heaven (closer to God) with more glory if you are more holy. Everyone in heaven are perfectly happy though.
