In many depictions gods such as Krishna, Siva, Vishnu, Etc. are blue skinned...I was wondering how this came to be.

It seems Parsu thinks I ask the question because I don't think it exists. I know it exists hence I ask the questions as to why. There is a spiritual and perhaps unanswerable nature to all questions in this type of forum...does that mean we shouldn't question?

The only reason I asked is because a friend of mine asked why Ganesh wasn't blue like the tattooo of Siva on my back...I couldn't tell her why so I figured I'd ask here...

"One of the theories is that Vishnu, because of his association with water, is depicted blue; therefore all his incarnations including Krishna, are shown as such. In Hinduism, persons who have depth of character and the capacity to fight evil are depicted as blue skinned. ...

"The theory of the blue coloring of Krishna goes to the fact that the Creator has given the maximum of blue to nature i.e. the sky, the oceans, the rivers and lakes. The deity who has the qualities of bravery, manliness, determination, the ability to deal with difficult situations, of stable mind and depth of character is represented as blue colored. Lord Krishna spent his life protecting humanity and destroying evil, hence he is colored blue."

Blue is the color of all-inclusiveness. You will see in the existence, anything that is vast and beyond your perception generally tends to be blue, whether it is the ocean or the sky. Anything which is larger than your perception tends to be blue because blue is the basis of all-inclusiveness. It is based on this that so many gods in India are shown as blue-skinned. Shiva has a blue skin, Krishna has a blue skin, Rama has a blue skin. It is not that their skin was blue. They were referred to as blue gods because they had a blue aura.

Red can mean stars and the light and heat they cast. Blue can be water but it also can symbolize night and the darkness the sun warms or lights. Green can me the lushness of land. But I've also heard ones associate to specific elements.

On the alien front. What if this planet was generally settled by migration of others who were human. Think of them as amish watched over and helped by the people transporting them who have no problems with technology. The high people may have radical life extension and a better grasp of sciences. Now if the land kept facing disasters and renewals they likely loose people, structures and even documentation. Perhaps the stories are a mix of two star systems.

As for blue aliens yes there probably are and there are also people born on earth with family tree's documented here that are perfectly human. Some suffer from a type of poisoning caused by one type of mining another is caused by a different type of cyanosis. This is documented and there have been tv series episodes talking on both type of blue people who are perfectly human.

I have a condition called Albrights disease. As a child I had some much darker brown skin seen as skin cancer and the rest of my skin was reddish. One test on me showed I carry the gene for one type of albinism. I pass often for white partly because of skin grafts after injuries I had when older and skin equalization. I've also had eye surgeries to fix problems. Before the grafts and surgery I had asian eyes which were baby blue, strawberry blond hair, and light red skin. As a small child I lived in Sri Lanka and Asia. I did stand out in both as an albino at the time.

Because they are intensely black-skinned (highly melinated) beings. They are what is referred to as "blue-black"! The term, "blue-black" originated in African American culture in reference to extremely dark-skinned blacks. The term was a humorous reference to the colorized versions of comic strips and such where an individual who had intensely black hair like Superman, for instance, and area of his hair where the glare of the sun shone against it, that area was rendered blue in color by the artist while the rest of the hair was rendered black. It was so black that it was blue! I say this because the earliest Hindus or Indians are the Dravidian stock and they are extremely dark-skinned and so they are in the image of their deities.
Because of the Aryan invasion imposed caste system and the years of British colonialism, many in India and elsewhere would probably try to dispute this rather obvious fact...

Personally I think in ancient times, Aliens visited the earth and the males interbred with the females, believing the females to be beautiful. (funny that a Earth animal quality transmutes as a universal constant), where by the women are deemed attractive and not the male, that may have more to do with male control and not wanting their females to gather foreign seed. Imagine 100 years ago if people came from the sky with revolutionary technology, powers beyond comprehension we would have seen them as Gods. Well think that nearly 5000 years ago when Lord Krishna was supposed to have been on the planet, and Lord Shiva over 12,000 years and some would argue since time itself, how would they have perceived them? The Bible, Tora tell us of the ones referred to as the "fallen Angles" who interacted with females and it is from this blood line that Kings and Queens claim their right to rule over us peasants!
Another depiction you will see with many religious depictions, is the prevalence of the snake. This is said to be because those that control the peasants come from a sect who worship the Nag, (snake), the name is Nagas. It is no coincidence that Royal Families are said to come from and carry blue blood. They also only inter marry, to keep the Blue Blood line pure.

Blue like the sky, shows their transcendental nature.

In India art is always symbolic and you will find a softness in its painting and sculpture. see Ajanta paintings. All lines are curved smooth. Blue colour is just symbolic. It has been associated in many different cultures and arts with devinity.

The Kangra school of paintings of Raga Vasantha portray a fair-coloured Krishna..... while Ragamalas from Bundi show a blue-coloured Krishna in yellow garments playing the veena.

In Tagore’s colour symbolism blue is existence, blue is roop, blue is lavanya, blue is anandablue is roop, blue is lavanya, blue is ananda.

Blue and yellow form Tagore’s favourite colour contrast
The interaction of colour and the five elements — earth, water, fire, air and the sky (akasa) — illuminates not only several disciplines such as Indian philosophy.

Blue stands for a sense of strength and power or force. it is colour of depth; of nature. ocean sky everything is a shade of blue.even fire has this shade.

Blue is the colour of the firmament, the sky and therefore of paradise. It symbolises divine truth and wisdom. The gods come from this colour: Osiris, Krishna, Vishnu, Buddha, Zeus and Yahweh rest their feet on the firmament. This blue celestial veil hides "the other side, the divine unknown", it is the cloak which "covers and veils the Divinity". Blue attracts man towards the infinite, wrote Kandinsky.

It is a fixed, cold colour encouraging meditation and rest oriented towards God.

In Tibetan Buddhism blue is the colour of transcendental wisdom and vacuity which opens the door to freedom.
Blue is the colour of Yang.

There may be another secular reason for using blue colour instead of black in india. Many art styles were originated as villages/tribal art. Blue colour was easily available and it was easier to draw facial features with coal on it. Some black dyes like ebony give blue streak.Ever tried an old black sketch pen? when the ink is fading it gives blue colour.they are not that different. Blue sky apears black in night.

I believe that since some of the most amazing, powerful and mysterious things such as the sky and the ocean are blue, the inventors if the religion per sieved blue to be a colour symbolizing power and superiority and saw that it would be appropriate for their gods to be this colour(representative of their superiority to all that is on earth.
