They do steal social security numbers from other people. The name is different but the social security number is ripped off. The employer gets notification that the name doesn't match the number when they submit W-2's at the end of the year. Then the poor guy who's ss# was stolen has to go through a long tedious hassle with the IRS to get that income removed. Especially since they use that fake number to get tax refunds they don't have coming. It's quite the racket and its a money maker.

True story...My sister went to live in Florida for a while, and while she was there, she applied to a job at Walmart. She turned down the job and moved back here. Later, when she tried to get a phone turned on, the phone company wouldn't do it, because she had $700 in outstanding phone bills from Bell South in Miami. My sister never went farther south than Orlando. She found out that the manager who interviewed her sold her ID to an illegal. Before she could do anything about it, the manager went back to Puerto Rico. And she never could find the person using her ID.

It is chronic and that is why they are trying to put together a true national database with biometric information (like fingerprints, specific to the real person whose ID it is). The idea is that the information embedded in the card would be specific to the person in front of you, and could be verified against a national database to make sure that person was legally able to work and didn't already have 70 or 80 jobs somewhere else, say.

there is a center that we are supposed to fax new hire documentation to since 911, I thought they would really be on top of any false id cards. I have sent papers in two years ago that I know are false but the INS has never made a peep. You have to accecpt their papers, even if you know they are false.

They usually aren't stealing identities, they are just using the same false identity over and over again, where there may be 300 people with the same name, social security number, etc.
