If you are talking about small dogs (you are in the dog catagory) they ALL need regular walks. I would recommend a stuffed animal for you.

Do you have a fenced yard, where you can just let a dog outside to play to expend some energy?
In my experience, Bichon's are slightly high-strung dogs with lots of energy so they do require regular walking to wear them out a little, (mom has 1, sis has 2) especially when young. I am sure with proper training, things may be different, but if you don't have the time or mobility to take them for regular walks, chances are
proper training may also be an issue.
Get a tarantula; They are fuzzy, allergy free, can be cuddly and require very little maintenance. Their walks/playground consist of climbing your body, arms etc. Bonus: just think of how bug free your home will be!!! ; )
If a tarantula isn't an option, you can check with your local SPCA or animal shelter for a small adult dog. More and More, people are downsizing their homes and moving into communities that don't allow for their old, loyal, furry friends, sad as it may be. You may end up with a very well behaved and thankful companion that is already trained and settled down. Just be patient and definately look around for a while before making a decision to get a dog. We wouldn't want to see him end up back at the shelter because he was too much work for you.
Good luck!

All dogs, particularly younger ones, need exercise. If you are unable walk them, you must be able to provide exercise in other ways - playing fetch, for example, and having a fenced yard for them to wander in freely. The best solution for you would be get an older dog (5 years or up) that is past the energetic puppy stage. A rescue group would work great: go to www.akc.org & click on 'breeds', then 'breed rescue' - many older dogs need homes, so this could be an easy match. Breeds that will probably work best for your allergy situation: Bichon Frise, Maltese, Toy or Miniature Poodle, or Havanese. There is no such thing as a non-allergenic or non-shedding breed, but these breeds come closest. Be sure to take the dog to a groomer every 3 months (aproximately) & get the short 'puppy cut' to help keep allergies at bay, too. Happy hunting!

an older dog wouldnt need as many walks as a younger dog and would be alot calmer
older = over 5 yrs old
Shih Tzu probably the best choice... terriers and poodles would go insane with not enough walks even at age 5... maybe over 10 or so... but it would depend on the dog
overall unless you are prepared to walk a dog at least evey 2 days you shouldnt get a dog... ALL non-shedding dogs require frequent trips to the groomers (every 6-8 weeks in summer, 8-12 weeks in winter) allowing these dogs to get matted hair is very painful - they need frequent brushing at least every 2 days...
honesly DO NOT GET A DOG YOUNGER THAN 5

Try fish. Really, between the allergies, wanting a calm animal that doesn't need exercise, there really isn't anything that will fit that description in a dog or cat

Just wondering why you want a pet dog if you aren't willing to take it for walks?
I under stand the allergies, I understand wanting calm, but don't understanding not wanting to take your dog for walks? How is that fair to the dog?

Some dogs have learned to use litter boxes. Otherwise, any dog you get HAS to go for walks.
Unfortunately, most small dogs tend to be a little excitable too. But I knew an old lady who had a cockapoo, and she doted on the dog. And the dog took very good care of her- or as good as was possible.

All dogs need regular walks, training and exercise. Try a reptile or tropical fish if you want a pet that doesn't.

I don't know of any dog that doesn't need regular exercise. You might want to consider another type of pet. ALL dogs need to be walked and exercised.

All dogs need regular walks. It is part of their training and socialization--not just exercise.
Also, most people are allergic not to a dog's fur, but to it's dander and saliva. Even "non-shedding" dogs have dander and saliva, so there's really no such thing as a nonallergenic dog.
