I would like to begin jogging...I walk frequently now. I was wondering about breathing techniques, too.

Don't over do it the first week or two. Nothing wrong with starting out slow. To prevent shin splints make sure you have a good pair of shoes and before jogging walk on your heals(stretches your shins) for 50-100 meters, yes you will look goofy, but you will save yourself alot of pain in the future. Save the rest of the stretching untill your done and muscles are warm. Eventually you want to get to where u breath in the nose and out the mouth. lastly i recommend finding a track with a nice rubbery surface, not concrete or cement.

Start off with short strides and let your body warm up, gradually increase the speed and find your groove. A good pace would be one that only allows you to speak 3-4 words at a time.
If you are just starting try walk and run intervals.

As before any running routine...please consult your doctor.

But for running. Work alot of it on your breathing. At least take one breath for every two steps. If you start to feel pain in your shins, make sure you have proper shoes. Don't tense up your body, or all your energy will go everywhere else but the legs. Relax..start off at a slow pace and when it becomes easy..go faster..in small increments.

Alternately pick up each foot, moving it in a forward motion and then quickly replace it on the ground, moving each opposite arm in the same forward motion, while doing the following: In hale, exhale. Inhale, exhale.

Also, concidering the question; you may want to wear a helmet, and pads - just incase you fall down, go boom! (kidding! - No, really.) :)

Tie shoelaces tightly.
Start by slowly putting one foot in front of the other.
When you feel comfortable, speed up the above process.
Carry on until you feel uncomfortable, sweaty and out of breath.
Stop.
