Lennon had a wonderful way with words. If you are a believer, then God is one thing. If you are an unbeliever, then God is quite another. Personally, I like the quote: "If there were no God, it would be necessary to invent Him". Not sure who said that, but it is most likely very true. As for Lennon's quote, yes, I quite agree

No offense to John or his family, but I don't put a lot of stock in what he ever said about anything besides music.

He was a brilliant musician -- but he was also, at the time he gave us his quote about God, a drug-abusing adulterer.

I know that toward the end of his life he had seemingly cleaned up his life and had a wonderful relationship with his wife and son -- which is great.

But at the time he said the "God is a concept" thing, his life was a mess by anyone's standards.

For one thing, God is REAL, not an idea, or concept to most people. Lennon is entitled to his opinion, just like everyone else.

It can be interpreted many ways, just like much of what he said. The message was likely one that belittled God as merely being a human construct to place judgements on things, but it could also be seen as stating the vlaue of God as a measure for all of our actions and those of others.

God is a concept by which we measure our pain,
I think you wanted to say.

It knocked me off my feet when I first heard it. But now I see it as poetic more than meaningful.

Mind you, the long part of the song where he's delineating what he doesn't believe in is amazingly powerful.

It's a great song.

You forgot the last 2 words. "God is a concept by which we measure our pain." I don't agree with it, but wouldn't expect any different from someone who said his group was bigger than Jesus.

He looked to false gods of the east instead of the one true living God.
