"megapixel

One million pixels. Refers to the resolution of a digital imaging device (monitor, scanner, video camera, still camera, etc.). For example, a five-megapixel digital still camera might take a picture composed of 5,038,848 red-green-blue color dots (pixels). The image would have a 2592x1944 resolution: 2,592 pixels across, 1,944 pixels down. See pixel and mega."

Simply put, the more pixels a digital camera has, the more detail it can capture, and the larger you can enlarge the photo. For more users, 5 or 6 megapixels will do just fine. As prices go down, and more features are added, you will see more people purchasing cameras with higher megapixels.

A megapixel is, without all the tech jargon, a measure of the amount of photographic information contained in an image.
This directly impacts resolution. The more megapixels, higher the resolution. A change of megapixels will change the image, because a higher resolution version of the same image will be more detailed than a low res one.
However when buying a digital camera megapixels aren't everything. Certain other factors need to be considered. For example these recently launched 10MP cameras can be outdone by a really good 8MP cam.

Simply put, one million pixels. The term is used in reference to the resolution of a graphics device, such as a scanner, digital camera or monitor.

Applying to digicams - the higher the megapixel, the higher the picture resolution, the bigger the print size.

This term refers to the size of an image, usually in reference to a photo from a digital camera or camera phone.

Megapixel means one million pixels. The resolution of digital cameras and camera phones is often measured in megapixels. For example, a two-megapixel camera can produce images with two million pixels.

Since pixels are usually square and form a grid, a 1-megapixel camera will produce an image roughly 1200 pixels wide by 900 pixels high.

By comparison, a VGA image (640 x 480 pixels) would be only 0.3 megapixel.

Megapixel images (1 megapixel or greater) are much larger than a phone display, so a megapixel camera will not make much difference compared to a sub-megapixel camera for phone-only applications such as MMS.

Rather, megapixel cameras are useful for taking photos suitable for viewing on a PC and/or printing. Sub-megapixel cameras produce smaller images that only print well at very small sizes.

Megapixel photos are larger in file size than sub-megapixel images, and so can take much longer, and cost more, to send wirelessly.

Most cameras and camera phones have an option to take photos at lower resolution (smaller), if desired. This is useful for taking photos that will only be sent via MMS and not transferred to a PC or printed.

The camera manufactures have developed this myth that the more mega-pixels, the better the camera. Unfortunately it ain't necessarily so

The number of mega-pixel you need depends on how you will use your camera. If you only plan to take snapshots and print 4X6 prints just about any digital camera you buy will work.

If you are interested in more serious photography, I would look for:

Optical zoom, what the lens will do. Not total zoom or digital zoom--that another marketing cheat that only makes your pictures smaller. Most decent camera have 3X optical zoom but if you are interested in bird and wildlife pictures for instance 12X zoom is the way to go.

Closeup capability-great for nature and flower picture.

Shooting Modes: Burst mood where you press the button and the camera takes a burst of picture. Full manual mode where you control the camera shutter speed and aperture that is coupled with manual focus. If you set the camera up right, you will have almost no shutter lag--great for candid pictures of the kids.

And most important, how the camera feels and operates.Too big, too small. Enough custom modes to go with the built in modes. And finally can you see what the LCD is displaying in bright sunlight. That's the one I forgot when I bought my last camera and my LCD is useless at high noon

The higher the megapixel, the better the image. But that only really matters if you are planning to print your photo at home. If you have low megapixels the printed pic will look pretty bad.

1 Million Pixel Image. Usually produced with high-end digital cameras, and Scanners. The greater the pixel count of an image the higher the resolution of that image.
