i was gone on a business trip for three days, and when I came back he banged on the basement door and I realized in shock that i'd forgotten to let him out! Of course I immediately released him. He was extremely hungry of course, and now he's not speaking to me. what should I do.

frankly speaking...i think you deserve it...
i even think that you should be reported to the authorities for doing such a thing to your child...
i come from an asian family, where beatings are still the norm, and scoldings are even more common. my parents will beat me until we understand what we have done wrong, and because of the beating, scared to do it ever again. but they have never gone so far to look me in the room without any food or water.
you should be thankful that he did not go to the cops immediately after you have let him out. what you have done is actually some sort of abuse.
to think that your son is easily forgetable, and that he is less important than your work, is extremely terrible...
please look within yourself and see what you have done wrong, and what could you have done better.
try to read up books on parenting, or ask for a psychologist's advice on proper parenting...
the only thing to do now, is be a father to him, and put him first.
you can start by apologising and explaining why you forget to let him out...

How true is this story? If you are serious, your son has a father without skills in parenting! Go to parenting classes. You did not state the age of your son, he must be living in turmoil if you are punishing him in this matter. You need professional help! I have to believe your son does also! If you really did this, there may come a day, that you will regret the things you have done, sometimes we do not appreciate our children, nor really listen and hear what is being said and not being said. Losing a child is very painful!

Wow... How Could You? That is messed up... locking your child in the basement? Think of a new punishment... like a hard spanking or something... but i don't know what you could do, just say sorry and give him madden 07 with an xbox 360

You are his father and to think that you can actually do that to your kid!!!!! How can you actually leave him in the basement for 3 days without any contact from him and not suspect anything wrong or even feel uneasy while away??? Frankly speaking, I think you really need to think about what you did!
HE COULD HAVE DIED DOWN THERE SHLD YOUR RETURN TRIP BE DELAYED!!!!!
If you are really sincere about doing something now, I think the least you can do now is actually to admit your mistake and apologise to him.... Whatever shame you feel in doing that , it will never be greater than the emotional trauma that your kid had to undergo in there.... Imagine you are the one thats locked up by your dad underground without any food for something you have done and without realising it, he's gone for days .....
What will you be feeling about????

You know this is child abuse and I hope that for the sake of your child you are just making this story up to get attention and to see what others will say. But if you are not I hope your child or a neighbor turns you in to authorities. People like you shouldn't have children. You will never cherish him they way someone else would and you are suppose to. You are a disgrace to parents every where.

Take him to go do things. Send him to his grandmas or relatives , friends If your going out of town. Say your sorry. If you hadn't of acted the way you did than you wouldn't have locked him in there. People make mistakes. Be good to him and show him your love and he will be better. Take him to 6 flags. He has earned it.

definitely not a way to raise a kid, well if he`s giving u the silent treatment then he is absolutely right... think about what he went through remaining 3 days in the basement, what would your reaction have been ?? try to understand how hurt and angry he is... and try to make it up to him by doing something u think he`ll like
