Just wondering after watching The Green Mile. I have come up with a shortlist:

hang, drawn and quartered.
radiation poisioning.
death by being pushed from a very tall building (gives the criminal time to be scared of his impending doom).
being boiled alive in a specially modified sunbed.

A slow burn is purportedly the most excruciatingly painful way to die.
Many who have been burned at the stake, for religious beliefs, were reported to have begged in agony for hours to be put to death.

I think being boiled alive in a specially modified sunbed would be the most painful because the person is being "cooked" alive until the person's body can no longer take it. I love the Green Mile but that movie is SO sad, I cried like a baby!

I think the fact that the lethal injection method has rigid steps and protocols makes some people happy, like it almost removes the executioners from their actions. Somebody sets up the chemicals before the prisoner is even brought in, then leaves. One guy puts in the needle, then leaves. Somebody else works buttons from outside the chamber that dump the chemicals. Everybody completes one thing in an established chain of events that somebody established years ago. Nobody really directly kills the prisoner, right? I always wondered why we deal with these fights in the supreme court over lethal injection methods. Why not anesthetize people like they do for surgery, then just pump them full of poison or something?

I'd have to say your last one; the sunbed.

Hanged, etc. - Extremely painful but with a definite ending.

Radiation - A close second, as it could last many years. But it can be no worse than a really bad flu.

Building - May actually be a thrill for some adrenaline junkies, and has too abrupt a finish.

Boiled - If you did it slowly, it'd basically kill you from the outside in. It'd dry the sh!t out of your skin, which would start splitting wide open. Eventually, you might bleed to death before your organs overheat. ... Yup, not much to look forward to with that one.

Execution by electrical storm. You are strapped to a wooden stake, doused with water and fitted to a metal hat attached to a lightening-rod. The fear that you will die at any moment as the storm approaches as well as being dragged out every time a storm pops up, would drive you insane. Not being struck the first few times would be the most mentally painful form of execution, especially if your innocent of the crime.

Starvation is a good one (the Nazis modified this by withdrawing salt). When I was a kid, I was interred by the Japanese in Hong Kong along with my parents. I saw people beheaded, tortured but starvation was on every prisoner's mind..the grinding pain, the muscle cramps, the bloating with water (we drank water to try to stop the gnawing pain). Day after day, week after week, the apathy grew...you knew you were going to die, and after liberation, we feared that the food would be taken from us...the various troops dealt out the food in sparing amounts (they had to because we weren't used to such rich foods) and everyone huddled close to a wall to hide their meagre rations and savored each bite. If you want to kill someone...use this technique.

They say drawn and quartered is the worst , being tied between 4 horses , the legs pulled from the body but it doesn't effect the spinal cord or central nervous system so you feel all of the pain until you bleed out

Burning at the steak. Unlike what you see in the movies, its a small fire that roasts the person to death over the course of several hours.
