"Salam" is an Arabic word meaning "Peace". Muslims say "Assalamualaikum" when they meet each other which means "Peace be upon you". This greeting is a way of strengthening the bond between believers because God said in the Holy Quran:

"The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make PEACE and reconciliation between your two (contending)
brothers; and fear God, that ye may receive Mercy." (The Holy Quran 49:10)

The word "Salam" is also the root word for Islam which besides meaning Peace, also means "Submitting yourself to Almighty God". Therefore Islam means "Peace obtained by submitting yourself to Almighty God".

Umm...it means peace, and derives from the same root as Islam which means submission. Besides, I doubt they would greet each other by talking about a food that contains pork, which is haram (forbidden) in their religion :)
