That bugs me too. I think they want others to know that they are praying... They want their fellows to come and join them... but wait a min... why do they use loudspeakers when they're already all together and praying?

it's not done in non-islamic countries unless u have a special radio that muslims can buy and u can hear the adhan from the mosque through the radio. Basically the "using a loud speaker to pray" is the call to pray (called the adhan) as u probably already know muslims have to pray 5 times a day, when the time comes to pray the adhan is said, originally in islamic countries this would be done from the top of a balcony sort of thing in the mousque so all muslims can hear it and remember that it is time to pray wherever they are whatever they are doing they stop when they hear the adhan and go to pray. But i have never heard it being done in a non-islamic country I live in england and it has never been done here, the muslims here have this radio that they can hear the adhan through, if u dont have the radion in ur home u wont hear the adhan.

Islam is a religion of discipline. In Islam it is insufficient for someone to just have faith. Faith must be accompanied by actions for it to be accepted by Almighty God. One such action is the obligatory daily prayer which is performed five times a day.

These prayers are performed during times specified in The Holy Quran and The Tradition of The Prophet. So when the time comes the adzan or call to prayer is done so that people can worship in a congregation which is more meritorious.

The need for a loud speaker is inherent nowadays as compared to years ago because our lives have been preoccupied by other type of sounds from other sources such as radio, television and vehicles which most of the time distracts us from remembering our Creator.

It also enables Muslims who live far from the mosque to know when is the exact time of prayer so that they can join the congregational prayer.

It is worth noted here that other than the five obligatory prayers, Muslims are also encourage to pray at any time of day except during sunrise, high noon and sunset for fear of worshipping the Sun. So you should be grateful that they only perform the adzan five times a day.

Islam does not allow for music to be encorporated into worship (though I think some forms of Sufism may do so), so it uses the human voice instead. It's the equivalent of church bells going off at all hours of the day. If you ban the Muslim call to prayer, then you'll have to ban church bells (at least in the US).

That's an old tradition that might need to be revised actually. The problem is that there's not a clear understanding of Islam and it's tools have become more of a political than spiritual agenda.
One of the basic teachings of Islam is "No enforcement in religion" and you'll love it when you know the truth about it.

It is a prayer call so that people in far off places can come and offer 5 times daily prayers. It is not to disturb or offend anybody.

All religions are the same. I live next to the church and I have to listen all day the ring of the bell. Annoying...

P.S: I think Churches should be without bells which are so loud.

I don't know, why should someone tell you when to pray? isn't that between God and you? what if it's after prayer time? then are you stuck till the next day? what are God's hours?
OHH, I forgot, they aren't talking to the true God.... sorry!

Hmm...the same reason that Christian churches are allowed to ring their bells. Why shouldn't it be allowed? They aren't hurting anyone. If you don't like it, wear earplugs or ignore it. It's really not that big a deal.
