My dear Freind.

No, land based launchers or defence systems are not obsolete but the military doctrine of the new nuclear submarine role is" to defend the home land far far away from its home land almost take the line of defence as far from home and as close to the enemy as possible" which increases the chances of destroying the enemy threat as fast as possible and if the the threat was a weapon of mass destruction, eliminating this threat on the enemy land is likely, not to pollute or spread this Mass destruction material on friendly lands or the home land , but to be destroyed over the agressor's land.

the second reason is that the most Naval Powers (USA, UK, Russia) has most of its borders and outlines are on the sea or the ocean, they are called "Naval Countries" .so, most of the threat will come to this country from the sea! thats why they take good care of naval forces with LONG ARMS. etc: Aircraft carrier, Nuclear Submarines.
