I certainly hope so!
I have been with my girl for a year now and she lives in Boston and I live in France.
Thats 4,000 miles!!!
We see each other whenever we can (and we've succedded quite well).
At the very worst its one week a month. Its really expensive but the fun side of travelling and (obviously) being together when we can makes up for it.
She has a career and I have two boys so it will be difficult for one of us to make the sacrifice to be together.
There is a lot of trust and we are totally honest with eash other which makes it work.

Yes they can but they require a lot more effort, trust and understanding since you dont have that 'local' abilty to end an argument with a cuddle, see your partner rebuff that person who wants them, convince them with a look that you are telling the truth etc....
The other thing is that it cant last forever .. a long distance relationship has to become a short distance one at some point otherwise it will never develop beyond a certain point.

depends on lots of things. I've had few between UK and Spain...there have been times when it's really tough and in the end I've found out that you either make sure you're together/ see each other as much as possible or you'd be better of jacking it in as an exclusive couple and opt for 'very close friends who are together when they can'...but I suppose it all depends on the attitude of those involved and how much you love someone..

Everybody is different and so all relationships will be different. It is how it makes you happy that counts. You could like the time together more than hate the time apart

Maybe short term, but it will never work in the long run unless you can be with that person physically.

Yeah, i think so. Me and my boyfriend live in neighboring states, but we e-mail each other practically every day and i call constantly. We've been going out for over a month now. Good luck!
