To the best of my recollection, a large study done some decades ago showed that cessation of smoking causes temporary weight gain, on average 9 pounds in the first year, but by the end of the second year, the weight gain is down to 4 pounds. If you actually exercise, those four pounds can be muscle, which looks ever so much better than flab.

Best wishes, don't give up trying to quit.

Well now, that depends. You have to rearrange your thought processes. People who smoke, usually do so for pleasure. Since they are into seeking pleasure, they are most likely to eat for pleasure if they give up smoking. If you live to eat rather than eating to live, you will no doubt gain weight. If you address your need for pleasure and find something else besides eating or smoking, you will find more enjoyment in the long run. If you decide you want to eat to live, all you have to do is count calories and make sure you don't take in more than you burn. (avg. person burns 1600 to 1800 calories a day just living and breathing.). My suggestion is to find enjoyment elsewhere, quit smoking, and eat a healthy diet. Find some kind of enjoyable, mild, aerobic activity like walking, cycling, or swimming. Stay busy with fun, productive leisure activities. If you have trouble doing this, make a list of all the benefits you will achieve as a result of doing this, and memorize it. Use this as a daily goal. Life will be a lot more fun and rewarding if you obtain optimum health.

Not necessarily. I stopped 26 years ago after smoking 3 packs a day for 20 years. I gained no weight because I acknowledged the myth that you MUST, and I watched what I ate. Plus, I got healthier, my house and clothes no longer smelled of stale smoke, my addiction was broken so cigarettes no longer ruled my life, I was able to save a lot of money, and I am a much happier person. Do it!! You can stop, and don't let the myth of necessary weight gain stop you.

Good luck!!

You may gain a few pounds here and there because many substitute smoking for eating. In my opinion, it's better to gain a little weight than to run the risk of getting cancer. I would say, since weight gain may happen anyway, why not substitute the craving to snack on something for grapes or mini carrots. And why not get your mind off of smoking by keeping busy and going to the gym?

You can depending on how you handle it. You can buy the smoke away things and they take care of withdrawals and cravings and even the weight gain. You buy them at wal-mart. Keep busy and drink a LOT of water and you will be fine then. Also eventually you will even lose weight and get healthy because smoking actually slows your metabolism until all the toxins are out of your body. Drink plenty of orange juice and take vitamins to clean out faster.

It's good that you brought that to everyone's attention. That's a fallacy. If you give up smoking, which is something which relaxes people before it eventually kills you, then replace the act of sticking the cigarette into your mouth with sticking food into your mouth ,yes you will gain weight . If you replace smoking with walking, or playing tennis, or other cardio vascular activities, you will find yourself getting thinner and healthier.

People who put on weight directly as a side effect of quiting smoking is due to the nicotine addiction making them substitute one craving for another. So instead of smoking a cigarette they get the munchies and eat to take their minds off of it.

No but if you go on birth control you will. The reason I think they say you will gain wait is because when you stop smoking your taste buds come back to life and you start liking foods you never did when you smoked.
