I have 2 rat terrier mixes (we think they are mixed with Jack Russells) - Penny & Trixie. They are both ADORABLE. We rescued both of them & have been the best dogs ever. They love everyone & most other dogs. They are a bit concerned when a new dogs is brought into the picture like our puppy pit bull Amos & it took a little to warm up to him, but for the most part they are very friendly. They lick a lot, housebroken easily, LOVES stuffed toys, very sneaky (aka, they will have something they are not supposed to quite quickly, but they are getting better at that), VERY smart, entergetic & lazy when I want them to be. They love to cuddle & they are very beautiful dogs. The one thing I hate the most is the SHEDDING!! We have white hair EVERYWHERE, but I would have 10 more if I could. :o)

Make sure that you have a decent fenced back yard for him/her to run around in. They are full of energy, kind of like a small child, wind them up and watch them go! They also get along well with other dogs and seem to know to what degree of roughness they can get away with when playing with other dogs. I have a sheltie pup who plays with my daughter's rat terrier (3 yrs old) all of the time and he plays pretty well with her. We also have a pit bull terrier in the house at the moment who is also a pup, but bigger than the r.t. and somehow they know they can play rougher with each other than with the sheltie.
Hope you have a good fence around your back yard, most rat terriers can clear them, but don't know it.
They're very affectionate and loyal, and a lot of fun to watch when they play.

My grandma has a rat terrier who is about five years old. What I can tell you about her dog is this: She barks constantly at strangers, she is VERY protective of my grandma, she is VERY temperamental, she was easy to housebreak, and many people tell me that rat terriers are scared to death of storms. My grandma's dog keeps her up almost all night when there is a rainstorm.
On another note, though, they are very smart and comical dogs. My grandma's dog was actually on "America's Funniest Home Videos" because we caught her on video when she figured out how to climb up a tree and the fence at the same time in order to jump out of a five foot high pen!
Good Luck!

I have a rat terrier and she is the cutest thing to me. She used to jump up on my arm when I came home from work. She likes to run and digs holes. She is funny when she makes her little dance, which she does on her own. She likes to eat everything and a lot of it. She hates the color black and barks at everything black including people, police, bikers. She is very protective. I lover her very much.

Make sure you have time to play ball with them and time to take them on walks! They are a high energy dog. Usually all terriers are.

Make sure you want a high energy dog. They are great dogs and very loyal but do like to run and play and lots of human interaction. Most of them are quite smart and learn quickly. Good luck and enjoy your pet.

Forget the terrier breed...they bark too much from my experiences. Try the Yorkies...much nicer and just as small.

These are on of the most high-energy dogs out there- if you want that, go for it. Generally they are overprotective, very loud and destructive, and hyper!! They are also smart and cute though...guess it just depends on what kind of lifestyle you lead...

High Energy
Mind of their Own
a "Prove it is worth it to me" attitude
Did I mention High Energy?!!!
They also have a ton of personality, fun sense of humor, tend to do well with kids if they are raised with them.
