"A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the Lord: even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the Lord"

(Deuteronomy 23:2).

I wonder who will be first to say "Oh but that's the old testament, that doesn't count anymore....... (except of course when it suits us).

A child born out of wedlock? Do you mean in the eyes of the society? Be of good cheer, because God knows better. Believe in Christ !

But actually, it is the old testament, because if you will remember, our Lord, Jesus was born to a woman who was not married at the time of conception. It wasn't her fault, and she did get married before she gave birth, but by old testament laws, the child would have been considered a bastard. Now you see why we are under God's grace now? Now, even a bastard child can enter God's Kingdom. A child should be raised up in the way that he should go, so that when he is old, he will not depart from it. That's in the old testament also, and it is still true today.

Personally, I think the entire Old Testament has been rewritten so many times over thousands of years and the exagerations . . . Come on now - there are people in there that lived to be 150 years old. I'm Catholic and I even had a priest tell me Noah's Ark was just a story and how could anyone live on a boat with all those animals and all their poop for 40 days and nights.
Think about it - how could God condemn a baby? The Old Testament is just that - old and very outdated.

To be honest with you, that is in the Old Testament, You can find many (shall not) in the Old testament. But the Old testament is a type & shadow of the New Testament. Now to answer your question, It was the custom & law back then not to let a Bastard come into the temple to worship. But Jesus came along & he came to Fullfill the laws, No he did not destroy the laws, but fullfill the laws, & now we are living under Grace, & Jesus said whosoever will come, let him come, & I will in no wise cast him or her out. Just like the 10 commandments, I believe them But we also have to understand them for our time & hour. I will use the Sabbath as an example, The jewish sabbath is from 6:00PM Friday to 6:00PM Saturday, so if we are to keep the sabbath, then we have to keep it as the JEWS did, & we will have to make our meals before the sabbath begins, you were not even allowed to cook on the sabbath. Many has wonder why we pick Sunday as our Sabbath, actually our Sabbath (REST) is in Jesus, & not in a certain day , that I will give you Scriptures, When The Apostles preach to the Jews they went into the temple on the Sabbath, but when Apostle Paul preached to the Gentiles he went in on the 1st day of the week, 1st Corinthians 16:1-2 The Apostle Paul said concerning the collection for the saints, or the tithing of the saints, He say, Upon the first day of the week let everyone of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him. It also goes on in the new testament & say, let no man judge you in, Eating of meats, Holy days or the sabbath, New moons. So the Christians today worship on the first day of the week because it signifies Jesus raising from the dead. So the true sabbath is Rest in Jesus Christ. Christ did not destroy the law, But when he hung there on the cross, he fulfill the Law. So now a Bastard can come into the chuch to fellowship. Did not Jesus do things contrary to the old testament laws, Yes, But they could not see that in Jesus, that he was here to fulfill the law. Also there is more than 10 commandments, Jesus said this commandment I leave with you that you should love one another as thou self. So now to answer your Question about a Bastard bound for Hell, that was a law in the Old testament, But since Jesus came alone, we all are bound for hell if we don't accept Jesus Christ as our Savior, & today if a child is born out of wed-lock they can be saved just as much as anyone else & go to Heaven. Jesus was that perfect Sacrifice for all, Even a Bastard.

Hello Dear!
Let me attempt your question. First of all, the Bible did not say a bastard - one born by unmarried parents - will go to hell. That was not what Deut. 23:2 states. It says "congregatin of the Lord" - an equivallent of church today. This was said because of some kind of ceremonial offence resulting from such union and God wanted to discourage youngsters getting into illegal sexual marriages. Today, a precious child born by unmarried couples is no longer tied to such restriction. Why? Christ has reddemed us from such laws. There are three categries of laws in the Old Testament (a) Ceremonial laws (b) Civic laws and (c) Moral laws. Of these three, only the moral & part f the civic laws still stand. By His sacrificial death on the cross, Christ has abolished those ceremonila laws which always required sacrifices.

Neverthelss, God's Moral laws still forbid unlawful sexual relationship. Sex is good and meant for married people. It should not be rushed into becuase of the complications it can result to for people who have not yet committed to each other yet "uniting" their bodies through sex. Are you O.K, Dear?

"enter into the congregation of the Lord' does not mean "go to heaven." Salvation was a matter of faith and covenant obedience. The expression "congregation of the Lord" is used in this section 6 times, but only 5 times in the rest of the Old Testament (one of those times is a reference to this one.) The phrase refers to a particular group with special previleges and responsibilities within the nation. 1 Chron 28:8 says, "in the sight of all Israel and of the congregation of the Lord, and in the hearing of [their] God." Here we see that "congregation of the Lord" is a distinct thing from "all Israel."

Are you wiling to learn? Or are you going to refuse to acknowledge the truth?

I think a lot of stuff like this was designed by God to keep God's people clean from the rest of the world. For example you think about tattoos today, there are people who get tattos and are christian so what is the point of the old testament. I think that tattoos were just like marrying into a pagan family getting a tattoo meant that you were siding with the world (Barbarians) and therefore not good enough for God. When child it born out of wedlock it means that his or her mother was permiscuous and should be ashamed of herself. Hence why a bastard family wouldn't be allowed in the church.

Because we are all destined for hell, regardless of lineage.

It is the GRACE that allows all of us sinners to then enter Heaven. Even those who under the law were condemnned.

Oh, and the "congregation of the Lord" is not Heaven, but was just referring to the body of people who go to worship in the Temple.

The Bible was written thousands of years ago imagine how old the Old Testament is. Fundamentals and society has changed rapidly and dramatic, its just that the book is too sacred to tamper with or take things out you don't like, that's why the New Testament is there. I'm sorry if the Bible has upset you but that was civilisation and beliefs more than 2000yrs ago.

Remember, the Pentatuch (1st 5 books of the OT) is Jewish scripture as well as Christian canon. The God of the OT is the God of Abraham and Isaac.

Thousands of years ago, marriage was valued above all else. Promiscuity was frowned upon, and a woman having sex out of wedlock was considered sinful.

What better way to discourage non-marital sex by convincing everyone that any child produced in this fashion was destined for hell! It's just another way that written scripture was used to help keep people in line.
