OK on Sunday we told my boyfriend's bro and his girl that we'd go to the beach with them this weekend from Friday to Sunday(3 hr drive) and split the cost of a hotel for 2 nights...the problem is that we realized we just dont have the cash right now (we will have to spend $ on drinks, going out, food, etc), I dont think they reserved anyplace yet but I still feel bad messing up their plans bc Im sure theyre excited...would you be mad on such short notice???

I'd be annoyed if one of the following applied:
1) If you did this to me habitually I'd be pissed.
2) If we had been talking about doing this for months and had finally gotten a date settled down. If that were the case you should have been putting aside money in advance or never agreed to a date to begin with until you were sure you had the funds.

However my annoyance would be softened by an honest explanation. At the very least you had the courtesy to tell me before I put a deposit down on a room.

But if you don't have money you don't have money. Just tell them the truth asap and move on. Do something another time. Better to tell them now when they don't have the room reserved than after the fact.

I wouldn't get mad. Disappointed maybe, but I'd try to understand. By all means tell them as soon as you can. The longer you wait, the worse it will be.

My husband and I had plans to go for a weekend trip with his brother and his brother's wife earlier this summer. Three days before we had planned to go my husband asked his brother what time we should be ready on the Friday and he said that they had cancelled their plans because they were kind of broke at the moment. THAT made us mad, because they had already decided it at least a week earlier and not said a word to us about cancelling the trip. Had they just told us it would have been ok, but finding out like this was not nice at all.

I might be disappointed, but not mad. I would be honest, and tell them soon. People should understand when the cost is more than you can afford. If you tell them today maybe they can find another couple to split the cost with, and please just be honest. I know its hard to let family down, but who hasn't gone thru tough times with money.

A week isn't much notice any way.Just explain to them your money problems and set a date a month or so from now,so you will be able to save up enough money and have a nice time

I would be a little upset, but if they were good friends they'd understand the money situation. I've turned down trips and had friends turn down outtings cuz of the money, so I think it'll be ok.

I wouldn't be mad. It would be worse to go with them then tell them right there that you didn't have enough money. That would mean they have to shoulder your expenses. There's no bigger spoiler than running out of money because some moocher friends want to keep up.

Just explain to them your situation, no money and that your sorry for agreeing to go prior to checking your financies first. Also let them know that you would like to reschedule this trip for a time that is better suited to your budget.

They will be disappointed, but they should understand if you tell it like it is.

Yes I'd be a little salty but you guys freeloading would piss me off more so the last minute cancellation is the best avenue.

I might be a bit annoyed, but if I haven't put down a deposit on a room yet then I'd get over it pretty quickly.
