Because, this society was dominated by men.
But in many other forms of religions, they have Goddess also. But God is a spirit, so he doesn't have sex, he isn't a man, neither a woman, he is an entity without sex....

Because during B.C. God had to be a man because they believed that men were the greater race. There weren't many cultures recorded that glorified women as such. The idea was that if God was creator of all he had to be a man because he had to be strong and "knower of all." Mother Nature was gentle and intuative taking on the traits of a woman. It wasn't until after womens rights that people even began publicly addressing that God may not be a man, but a woman or even multi-gendered. Nowadays I don't think people so much picture a man, but refer to God as "he" because "it" only works for an object.

According to Bible, The Old Testament part (so this includes all Christians and Jews as well) - God created Adam, first man, resembling to Himself. And Adam was a man, not a woman, so probably God is male, not female.
But, it is very likely that God isn't male or female either.

This is because the idea of God is the creation of man. This idea took a foot hold in a time where men were in charge and women had no rights. The idea of God existed purely for political gain.

"God the Mother" left after the incident with the locusts and the 7 plagues so the human race became a one parent family....
And another thing, He's never there when we need him! I believe in the "God the Father", "God the Social Worker" and "God from the Child Protection Agency".

Sometimes when the words 'he' and 'man' are used, they describe humans rather than the male of the species.
When God is mentioned as 'he', the word refers to his masculine and feminine side - Adam and Eve were made in Gods image because God is neither just Male nor Female, he is bigger than a 'sexual definition'.

Because when God came down to earth as an actual, physical being with a body, gender ,etc., it was male. He was known as Jesus Christ. You can read the historical accounts of his life in the New Testament books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Well in the beginning, women were thought of as possessions, like cattle and chickens.... so the male translators of the bible of course transcribed God as a man. However if we are in God's image, then he is both male and female, able bodied and disabled, black , white, yellow, brown etc.
Have you never heard the children's hymn Some Children See him?
Or listened to Ray Stevens' Everything is Beautiful where there is a children's choir singing' Jesus loves the little children, all the little children in the world. Red, yellow, black and white , they are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world. To my way of thinking that doesn't leave anyone out.

Because most religion (but not all) are created by men. And of course, men thought that God can only be a man!

God is a woman. Haven't you ever noticed that you're happiest when you're in the presence of a woman? God, if it exists, resides as a woman in heaven to give you that feeling forever in the afterlife.
