Not the Wright brothers though they got the credit. Although they are credited with the first manned heavier than air powered and controlled flight, their degree of control was limited. Leonardo designed a glider that it has been shown would fly although it would be very unstable. Think the honours should go to George Cayley, who discovered the airfoil section necessary for the further development of aircraft and much other aeronautical discoveries, and his coach man John Appleby, who reluctantly piloted the craft 50 years before Wright brothers. Like so many things we Brits invent it but completely fail to develop it.

The Wright brothers, Orville Wright (August 19, 1871 - January 30, 1948) and Wilbur Wright (April 16, 1867 - May 30, 1912), are generally credited with making the first controlled, powered, heavier-than-air flight on December 17, 1903. In the two years afterward, they developed their flying machine into the world's first practical fixed-wing aircraft, along with many other aviation milestones.

They invented airplane.Wilbur made their first official public demonstration on August 8, 1908, at the race track of Le Mans, France. His first flight lasted only one minute 45 seconds,Orville followed his brother's success by demonstrating another nearly identical flyer to the United States Army at Fort Myer, Virginia, starting on September 3, 1908
