I would think that crystal on the watch was already scratched as the crystal is a very hard substance and it is very hard to scratch. I have never heard of a finger nail scratching the crystal on a watch. I have used my own nails to scratch something off my crystal several times and have yet ever scratch mine one time.
In order for something to scratch something else, one has to be harder than the other, so that would mean that your Aunts nails were harder than the crystal it's self.
Also some watches come with a thin tiny piece of plastic coating over the crystal that you peel off when you get it, have you peeled this off if it had one on it?

Out $1000
If you paid $1000 for a watch and noticed a scratched crystal, take it back for a refund. Your aunt's finger nail, even the fake metal glue on, won't scratch the saphire crystal.

It depends on whether or not it was an accident. Make certain that it was scratched by her because it could have came like that and you can get a replacement.

ask her what she did that for. Seems like a pretty malicious thing to do. If she hasn't already, ask her to apologise and if she has damaged it I don't see why it would be unreasonable to ask her to contribute to fixing it or replacing it.

I would tell he that I expected her to pay for it, I guess how I told her would depend on if it were an accident or not.
