Be sure you are giving enough of the hairball medicine. The vet I work for says to give a full finger length three days in a row when hairballs are being a problem and then give that much once or twice a week as a preventative.
If your cat is eating normally, try the hairball route for a few days and see if the problem clears up. If he stops or slows his eating, acts lethargic or begins hiding, see the vet right away.
There are other medical conditions that can cause vomiting and your cat may need some bloodwork run. At age 10 (or any age), I wouldn't take a chance.
Most people think of hairballs as minor but, working at a cat vet, I've seen cats get totally blocked up with hair -- they can't eat because food can't get past the blockage or they can't have BM's because they are blocked on the other end. Sometimes surgery is required to save their lives.

10 years old? Hon... you need to take him to the vet, immediately. Until then...Watch the size of his stomach, making sure it does not begin to bloat. Make sure he's drinking water. Watch for any changes in sleeping or any other behavior. You've got several things here that could be going on, especially with him being as old as he is. And I don't think hairballs have anything to do with what's going on.

If it is a hairball, try putting a few tiny bits of butter in a dish and letting him eat/lick that.
If it doesn't go away by tomorrow, I'd take him to the vet

Have you tried butter. A tablespoon of spreadable butter. Always helps Sugar our cat. I would see the vet though. It may be that you have to change the food your cats eating. I would preferably feed my cat Purina one Chicken and Rice. Chicken is easier on there stomachs. No soft cat food that gives them diarrhea and give him plenty of cold water. No scraps from the table it can make them sick.
