I am not sure if density is a little too simplistic or not.

Between a scale and a fish tank partially filled with water, you can determine the density of any solid object and compare those items to a pre-determined scale.

Density = Weight / Volume

Scale gives you weight (needs to be pretty specific scale)

By marking a fish tank at a know level and adding a known volume of water, you should be able to calibrate a scale (starting at the original level of water) and use the scale to determine the volume of almost anything which has been fully submersed in the water.

This will give you both weight and volume and allow you to calculate density.

Easy but advanced? Maybe look up something on the Net to get plans for a (small) solar-powered generator to power a fan or something.Solar power and alternatives to petrol are popular at the moment and this would show that it can work and has a practical application.

If you want something with an "awe" factor that isn't to hard, looks fantastic, and is fun to do, than look at a robotics project. I would suggest doing an artificial life form like a cybernetic bug. Check out the link in my source list below to see one. They are fairly easy to build, and fun to study. These particular ones I have worked with and its amazing how we can recreate basic instincts of insects with technology. There are many things to choose from to focus on, but I would suggest answering the question "Can instinct be recreated in robots?" Its sure to get your first place. I know it always worked for me in Science fairs, people always like things that move, blink, and are interactive.

1) a model of an AC distribution system and/or a comparison with a DC version?

2) the use of a vacuum thermocouple to compare direct to alternating voltages or currents.

3) Desribe how a thermocouple works to measure temperature.

4) make a model saturated standard cell

5) make a battery from fruits and/or vegetables and test their output voltages and currents. (Chiles work great!)

Consider doing something with polarized light; including understanding its many applications. Use the lenses from polarized sunglasses to demonstrate how you can control light by rotating the lenses on top of each other. Good luck.
