The old fashioned way of keeping apples from "browning" so to speak was to rub some lemon juice on them. If anything it'll slow down the process of oxydation.

However the hint of lemon may turn the kids off.

remember the schools serving apple slices and you could always see water in the of the big pan they had them in??? Salt water. Thats also how I keep my apples from turning brown when I am freezing them to make apple sauce later on.

Squirt lemon juice over them. It stops the oxidisation of the apples which turns them brown, but it can leave a funny taste.

i usually soak apples in pineapple juice when i make apple pie to keep it from turning brown. i do the same when i want to pack sliced apples for a picnic: i soak them in pineapple juice for a few minutes, drain, then pack them while still moist. i make it more interesting by mixing in sliced pineapple as well.

bon appetit!

Why don't you bake them in the oven to make a nutritional sweet substitute instead? Add nuts and raisins if the kids like them too.

I do this for my little one! Just a little vinegar brushed on the top, my girl says she can't taste it & it preserves it enough not to send it brown :o)
