Five Han class SSN have been in the PLAN inventory since the early 1990s, though the operational status of the individual submarines tends to fluctuate as boats undergo refits. The first two submarines of the class underwent their mid-life refits in the late 1980s. 403 and 404 began their refits in 1998 and returned to service in 2000. The 405 submarine began its mid-life refit in 2000 which is believed to have been completed in 2002.

According to a 2002 estimate by the US DoD, the first Type 093 Class SSN probably will be operational soon after 2005. It eventually will replace the HAN Class SSNs, all of which China will withdraw from service by 2020.

Not as good as Pennsylvania's Cheese Steak Subs, but better than the Italian Subs. The chinese should stick to Lo Mein and General Gau's Chicken, tho.

I doubt they are very quiet the gold standard in subs. The Chinese boats are in their second generation and will not be as quiet as our boats now in there 6th generation of design it will take alot of R+D to catch up. There boomer has spent almost it's entire existence in dry dock. That means there was a lot of problems. I don't know about this new class of boomer the 094 but you can be sure there is a us sub on it's tail learning every little ping and burp it makes. I doubt Chinese have a good homing torpedo similar to our Mk48.

They will have the biggest navy of any nation in 20 years.

But big deal,I prefer the subs over at Mr.Chen's on Wilshire, and for a twist on the classic'Sub" theme,I suggest Anabargh's lunchtime sub with tandoori chicken,
It's simply SCRUMPTIOUS!

Probably good enough to be called submarines. But that's not the test of a good submarine. The test calls for the sub to submerged to its programmed depth then surface in the prescribed manner.

Many of their submarines have managed to get to the programmed depth but somehow failed to surface in any manner.

When that happened the test report said, " Subman dunk, Subman sunk, Subman punk."

Not many left.

They are good considering the increasing numbers, 57 already deployed and building and buying more N-subs with missile capabilities (Type 093 and 094 based on the Russian Victor-III class).

They are good ennough to carry at least one nuclear missle. China had less than 6 with that capability but even one can be very destructive.

Thanks to the friendly Americans, a lot better than our subs.

When the US gets surprised in the South China Sea, then one will quickly discover how many the Chinese have.
