It actually means a little more than just submission.....it means `submission to Allah'. It is important to define that because if islamic terrorists were submissive in principle they would not blow people, buildings, and themselves up. But since they believe their teacher Mohammed had a hot line to God and they have license for interpreting scripture, they feel it is submissive to Allah to kill and annihilate all things that are different from what they dictate it should be.

Great Question. Islam means Submission to God and Islam was brought by Last Prophet Muhammed(PBUH). Islam is not an organized religion like Christanity and Judaism and there is no nationalism in Islam as sometimes proclaimed!

Islam comes from the same root word as " salam" (shalom in hebrew), which means peace and submission... so the entire meaning can be taken as "Gaining Peace through submitting one's whole being to God's will." :) I think it's a wonderful name for a religion...
In the Quran, those who submit to god are called "muslims"... including those righteous chritians and jews who believed in their prophets (jesus and moses, respectively) at the time. But after people began to stray from the right path, they were called by what they worshipped, such as "christianity" or "judaism"... hopefully muslims will not have to be referred to as Mohammadans for worshipping him....cause that would be just too sad....

I know you are strictly talking about the name itself, but I just wanted to point out that the religion and belief structure of Islam came from Judaism just as much as Christianity did.

The Jewish, Islamic and Christian faiths are the only monothistic religions in the world.............we based our religions on the same God. No where in the Koran does it say that it is ok to take the life of innocent people. These terrorists' groups have just twisted their thinking....same as the other two religions mentioned have some twisted minds. That, to me, is what is so sad about the violence in the world.
