If it is XP with a 30 gig Hdd it could not be that old.
The cables should be color coded and the only two that are interchangable are the keyboard and mouse and, they have a little picture next to where the cable plugs in.
If you still do not understand how it goes you can carefuly look behind the computer you are using and see the layout.
Starting in '95 many of the (Windows OS) computers as many are now using an ATX Mother board so, you should be good to go as far as connections.

It really isnt that difficult to do .
Get hold of the motherboard manual if you can.
Alternatively just search the net for any sites involving pc building since they are prettty much all the same particularly in terms of the power and IDE cables to the motherboard.

Most of the cable ends will only connect to where they are supposed to go. Trial and error seems to work great for me. I have had no training and I put together computers from junk parts all the time.

If you could email me some photo's of the inside structure and lable each cable like 1-10 or in single letters I could tell you where each one goes since I used to build computers and it's not hard.

get some pizza. and some cola, and lots of ice, and don't be cheap. Call up your geek pals and throw a party... they'll make it scream!
Maybe give you a LiveCD of http://pclinuxos.com !!!
Teach you how to go to the motherboard site, based upon the little code from the bios on the left side of the screen... or from the numbers on the board...
Or, let one give you $5 for it, and just go back to your virus magnet.

Try the website of the PC's manufacturer. They may have the manual for the board available for download.
