A licence is the most common form of ID. Identifing you age is the important part not your ability to drive but many states will use something that resembles a licence for legal identification. There is data that makes it very clear that drinking at a certain age causes more accidents. Many of the people involved in those situations do not have an insurance so that the cost of their care is taken up by everyone. Hospital bills are unbelievably high and repairing cars, buildings, any of the damage from drunk driving is shared by everyone in the community. If I don't drink and drive, why should MY car insurance be so HIGH? That is one of the reasons for the ID law with buting alcohol.

In UK the driver licence expires at the age
of seventy. The shop owner will find out,
what is customer's age looking at driver
licence. Tricky !
Dink and dive ? No we don't do that.

It's not compulsory to show a driver licence, as you can pass your test at 17 so therefore you'd still be too young to buy drink.

Age verification is the obvious answer, but that's not what you want to know.

People are free to drink and NOT drive...just because a person chooses to drink, that should not preclude them from having a driver's license.

You only need a license or an official ID that proves your age; you are not proving that you can drive but giving proof that you are old enough to purchase the alcohol which you presumably intend to imbibe.

really what you need is state accepted identification and for most people that is a driver license however there are other forms such as military identification card, state identification card NOT driver etc, it is just the easiest form of ID that proves your age

I'd tatoo people with a bar-code stating their exact age. Then they could dink alcogol even if they can't dirve.
