Because the airlines don't sell based on what it costs them. They work on crazy outdated models that lose them money.
A bigger example than the above is that it is cheaper to fly from Dayton to Portland than from Cincinnati to Portland even though the Dayton flight comes to Cincy then you get on the same flight from Cincy.
If the Major airlines would cost lower at their hubs people would drive to them instead of away from them. Thus saving the airlines operating costs.

It isn't always, but it is annoying when it does. When I left Saudi Arabia for the last time, the company gave me a one-way ticket home. I traded it in for a round trip ticket and about $200 in cash. Anybody need a ticket from Calgary to Riyadh? Such a deal I have for you...

Imagine a scenario where one way is exactly 1/2 of return (forget the taxable difference for this example). The airlines are basically doubling the transactions that they have to make with the passenger because one for both one ways. That increases their costs, wastes time for both parties. By increasing the cost of one way they are discouraging people from buying one way and planning the length of their trip in advance. Hope this helps.

If the airline you're reserving with furnish pre-determination of seats you do (for a cost). some airlines (an occasion would be Southwest) do no longer enable pre-determination of seats; they have an open seating coverage. you're assigned a boarding team once you examine in, then whilst your boarding team is reported as you board the airplane and %. you seat (while you're no longer in between the 1st boarding communities then you definately maximum in all probability does no longer get a great seat). If the airline you're reserving on gives you pre-determination of seats then you definately could take transport of the alternative as you're procuring your tickets, to boot as expenditures.
