Has anyone read a good dog behaviour/ training book?

I have read Jan Fennell's books and really liked her methods - would like to read more books and train/ understand my dogs further - any suggestions?

This is a great hands-on training book

The Other End of the Leash -- Patricia McConnell
A highly recommended general dog behavior book that all dog owners should read

Culture Clash -- Jean Donaldson
Another great book that helps you get inside your dog's head

Don't Shoot the Dog! -- Karen Prior
A classic; a deeper understanding into operant conditioning, but an easy (and important!) read for people with interest in that deeper level of training

The Everything Dog Training and Tricks Book looks like a fun one though I have not read it myself.

Personally, I'd take Cesar Milan's stuff with a grain of salt. Many of the techniques he uses, especially on his TV show, are controversial for the reason that they can be very dangerous. There's no question that he's a natural dogperson and is extremely charismatic toward both humans and dogs, but some of his ideas and methods are really out there. Go ahead and read/watch, but employ lots of critical thinking.

Check out anything by Bruce Fogle and John Fisher, both very influential people who were active during the early days of developing behavioural training methods.

Also, get hold of Genetics and the Social Behaviour of the Dog by Scott and Fuller, its a book detailing the original study into canine behaviour, and how early experiences affect later behaviour.

Also, the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors has a list of books available.

I love Jan Fennel's books! They make so much sense! Cesar Millan, "The Dog Whisperer" has a book out. I am reading it now, it's great, very similar approach to Jan. Dog Tricks for Dummies is also a great book for tricks and clicker training. Good luck!

I have read serveral of them books now I am house broken and I learned 25 new tricks like roll over and fetch!

no I have not seen any book later are dog got hit by a car one winter he was cold and he was outside the door for 10 minutes and my parents missed his barking and I was in bed sick so he took off on his journey he got hit crushed his splean and sapped his back he crawled to the curb and fell in a storm drain we took him to a vet and he said I could patch him up but all he would ever do is look at you and bark but that is it we said that was no life forhim so put him to sleep.
