A very early operating system (1980's) developed by Microsoft, although it is believed that Bill Gates stole the idea from someone else. It was a text typing interface, so it was not very user friendly.
Windows verson 1 to 3 used DOS to load, so DOS was needed (one would have to start windows from DOS on start up). Windows 95 and 98 also ran from DOS, but the computer would boot up in windows first. Windows ME, 2000, and XP do not use DOS at all, but a command prompt is included in Windows program.

It's an operating system that is much better than windows. It requires less memory and viruses were never possible until Microsoft gave us Windows. I have a dos computer that I use for all my old programs that have been "improved" for use with Windows. DOS has a list of commands that you can use to access your hard drive, edit files and manage directories. You can still access DOS from the Windows platform, but they don't make it easy.
