As pointed out earlier, this was an accepted practice back then, and not just in the Islamic world. If we are going to use today's moral and ethical standards to just the actions of ancient people, then many of the revered figures of the bible should also be reviled (war crimes and genocide by Israelite kings, slavery, and Solomon with his many wives and concubines).

I dont have the exact quotation so dont take my word as the word of God. I do know the gist however.
Haz Ayesha was the daughter of the Holy prophet's best friend. It is said in a Hadith that the prophet had a dream continuosly that the angels brought him a red Bahraini cloth and when he lifted it he saw haz. Ayesha.
What i remember is that she said that she was playing with her dolls with her friends and her mother called her. She was asked whether she wanted to marry the prophet. she was married after her consent was given. i think that the actual ceremony of giving the bride away happened a few years later.
Point to remember. Our prophet was our role model whatever he did was to make it clear for the next generations of Muslimswhat was permitted and what was not. In Islam a girl and a boy are legally adults when the reach puberty. The age for puberty differs in all regions and in the hotter climates girls tend to start menstruation earlier than say a girl in Noth America.
You can do a search for Sahih Bukhari Hadeeth .His compilations are one of the largest.

first, not everything is about sex.
2nd, this girl called Aisha, she was the first scholar in Islam. she was more as a student than a wife. After the death of prophet Muhammad, she recorded 25% of his words and teaching. when one person recorded 25% of the prophet words, then u must know she was important. she carried his message to the next generation. Muhammad was a shy man, he couldn't answer all the questions that comes from Muslim women, so he used to give them to Aisha to answer it for him. this woman has a wisdom and intelligent that didn't exist in any of his wives. scholars and especially women gathered around her to listen to her. Muhammad to her was like a prophet, husband, and father.
i wouldn't speak about the time and tradition differences back then, but i just want to give you example, here in the USA cosine marriage is not accepted, but homosexual relationship is acceptable. however in Arabia cosine marriage is completely fine, while homosexual is a big NO. this is just an example to let u understand that culture and time play very important role as well. otherwise the enemy of Muhammad will make it a big deal against him when he married Aisha.

A TV program last week gave some information about an Iranian
law concerning sex outside marriage being illegal.
And also that the age of consent for a female is 9 years old.
So an old man can marry a 9 year old kid and have sex with her.
If that pervert Gary Glitter knew about this kind of thing, I wonder
if he would have become a muslim and moved to Iran.

you gotta look back at the hundreds of years, at how young the females were before they married. It was a common practice then. Besides, before hand, Aisha was actually engaged to a Non-Muslim Jabir. It was broken off and then she was engaged to the Prophet Muhammad SAW for 2 years before marriage.

What is unusual about that?
Abraham's son Isaac married Rebekah when she was 3 and he was 40.
Apparently, you've never read the bible. ALL of God's "Holy Men" were sexual deviants by today's standards.

On the face of it looks pure and simple lust. It is explained away. Those days(7th century) it was acceptable in the society and it was nothing unusual.
